An interesting response from a friend of mine who used to live in China:
In Chinese, the closest thing to cyberspace is 虚拟 (xuni) where the character xu means "void, emptiness" and ni means "plan, model, or imitation". This is how people say "virtual."
A quick search in an online english-chinese dictionary for cyberspace yields: 电脑空间, lit. "computer space". And of course, "computer" itself is made of two characters: "electric" and "brain".
Another dictionary translates "cyberspace", oddly, as 控制空间, lit. control/led space.
